Wool

Naturally water-resistant, anti-bacterial, and flame-retardant

Wool (including merino, alpaca, cashmere, and mohair) is naturally water-resistant, anti-bacterial, and flame-retardant without any chemical treatment. It breathes well in all temperatures and resists mold and wrinkles. Wool is biodegradable and can last for decades with proper care.

Sustainability benefits

  • Naturally water-resistant, anti-bacterial, and flame-retardant
  • Breathes in all temperatures — warm in winter, cool in summer
  • Resists mold, wrinkles, and odors without chemical treatment
  • Biodegradable at end of life
  • Extremely durable — lasts decades

Drawbacks to consider

  • Animal welfare concerns depending on sourcing
  • Some people find it irritating on skin
  • Requires careful washing (can shrink/felt)

What to look for

Choose organic, local, or ethically sourced wool. Merino is softest against skin. Alpaca wool is hypoallergenic and warmer than sheep's wool.

How wool affects a product's score

Wool is a natural standard material, scoring 3/5 on materials. Its exceptional durability (decades of use) and biodegradability boost durability and end-of-life scores. Wool products with warranties or repairability claims score even higher.

Scores are computed from four dimensions: materials, durability, end of life, and packaging. Each is scored 1–5 using transparent, open-source rules.
