Bamboo
The fastest-growing plant on Earth
Bamboo can grow up to 3 feet in 24 hours and requires no pesticides. However, how it's processed matters enormously. Solid or mechanically processed bamboo is excellent. Bamboo Lyocell/Tencel uses a closed-loop process. But bamboo rayon/viscose involves toxic chemicals (carbon disulfide) — making the end product far less sustainable despite the sustainable source.
Sustainability benefits
- Fastest-growing plant — up to 3 ft per day
- No pesticides or fertilizers needed
- Naturally antimicrobial
- Biodegradable in solid form
Drawbacks to consider
- Bamboo rayon/viscose uses toxic chemicals in manufacturing
- "Bamboo" labeling can be misleading — check the process
- Transportation emissions if sourced from distant regions
What to look for
For textiles, look for "Bamboo Lyocell" or "Tencel" labels — these use a closed-loop process. Avoid "bamboo rayon" or "bamboo viscose" which involve toxic chemicals. For solid products (utensils, cutting boards), bamboo is excellent.
